Jobing Description

The Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences seeks a qualified candidate for the position of Assistant Director for Undergraduate Studies in Mechanical Engineering, with a concurrent lectureship. The successful candidate will teach courses within the undergraduate concentration and assist with the management of the concentration.

This position reports academically to the concentration area dean and administratively to the assistant dean for academic programs.

Main reponsibilities:
Within the undergraduate concentration: conducting and coordinating student advising and mentoring; monitoring students progress towards degrees; teaching or co-teaching one entry-level course each semester.

Other responsibilities:
Identifying and coordinating placements for research opportunities within SEAS or other Harvard research laboratories; working with the SEAS Undergraduate Student Affairs Office on all documentation and events related to the concentration; working with faculty members to identify best pedagogical practices and to develop courses; assessing existing courses; advising teaching staff on pedagogy; developing and maintaining concentration-related literature and its Web presence.
Basic Qualifications This position requires a Ph.D. in engineering sciences, mechanical engineering, or a related field, and a breadth of understanding that includes electrical engineering, biomechanical engineering, environmental engineering, and engineering design; the documented ability to teach effectively to undergraduate students; familiarity with engineering design, preferably with some experience teaching design; excellent communication skills; a strong commitment to education and mentoring, including experience with advising and course/program development.
