Knubble Bay Camp, a volunteer managed facility of the Appalachian Mountain Club has need for an on-site summer season volunteer caretaker for its waterfront cabin in Georgetown, Maine. The cabin will be occupied for the entire season by a succession of small groups for rental periods ranging from one day to one week, based on advance reservations. On several weekends the KBC committee will be running trips from the cabin and the caretaker will not need to be present.

The caretaker will reside on site in a canvas wall tent with rudimentary outdoor cooking and refrigeration capacity. An outhouse and solar shower are on site. Water is from a well.

The caretaker will be considered a volunteer of the Appalachian Mountain Club. While the position is unpaid, it is a unique opportunity for someone interested in recreational or outdoor resource management, environmental or conservation education or similar fields. The potential for credit for independent study in these areas is a possibility which could be pursued by a motivated student.

Upon successful completion of duties at season s end, the caretaker will receive a voucher for 2 nights free stay at any AMC destination.

Primary responsibilities will include the following:

* Serve as primary contact person between renters and the KBC committee
* Monitor functioning of fire alarm system, appliances, well, Clivus composting system and cabin condition and remedy problems if feasible based on a provided operations manual;
* Welcome arriving renters, familiarize them with the operation and rules concerning the cabin and its facilities, and deal with any issues that arise.
* Contact the designated KBC committee member in the event of more-complex problems.

The position is part time. On-site presence is anticipated to be a few hours per week at the transition of renters to answer any questions related to the functioning of the cabin systems and to troubleshoot any maintenance related issues. The overnight presence of the caretaker allows the opportunity for monitoring the use of the facility, including adherence to the legal restriction to 15 occupants. The caretaker would be able to leave the site as desired provided he or she maintains a regular presence on site for the above purposes specifically including the time period of renter transition.

The caretaker will ideally be someone who enjoys camping, appreciates the Maine coast and is a good people person . This is an opportunity to live rent-free on the mid-coast with a recreational playground at your fingertips. Kayaking, canoeing, bicycling, camping on the Maine Island trail, hiking, swimming and beach walking are all possible from the premises. The caretaker will be able to use the amenities of the cabin if and when it is not rented.

Desired skills:

* Good physical condition
* Good interpersonal skills
* Resourceful and independent
* Ability to work and live alone ( or with a companion ) in an outdoor setting with minimal job supervision
* Knowledge of living off the grid a plus
