Position responsible for operating heavy equipment related to labor functions for the department, including operating heavy trucks and equipment, and laborer’s tools required for variety of work projects, and ensuring for the safe and efficient operation of vehicles and machinery. 



  • Follows all safety policies and procedures
  • Operates various DPW equipment and vehicles (grade all, back hoe, excavators, bobcats, front-end loaders, crane truck, asphalt paver, etc) used to excavate, load, haul, place, and store material, ensures the safety of men exposed while excavating, and ensures that all safety precautions are followed while performing work. Keeps log of activities as required.
  • Drives trucks and Class A trailers to haul materials, plows snow, operates sander and other vehicles and equipment as assigned.
  • May operate equipment normally run by an HMEO.
  • Performs an equipment circle check; lubricates, adds oil, inflates tires and otherwise services equipment to ensure proper operation; reports any malfunctions to supervisor, and may assist in making minor repairs and maintenance.
  • Performs duties of laborer at the worksite, operates jackhammer and other power tools and equipment, uses shovels, rakes, and other hand tools as required for construction projects.
  • Participates in snow and ice removal operations and other emergencies as declared by the City.
  • Performs similar or related duties as required by the supervisor.

  • Three to five (3-5) years of prior experience in truck driving and department equipment operation; or any equivalent combination of education or experience.
  • A candidate for this position should have a valid Class A Massachusetts Commercial Driver’s License with Hoisting/Hydraulics endorsements.
  • Commercial Drivers License minimum Class B required.
  • Employee must have a valid Massachusetts Class D driver's license.
